Indian Flat Bread
About 1 year ago I took an Indian food cooking class here in Shanghai. We learnt a few delicious food, like curries, dessert and this easy flat bread recipe!
I made again this recipe just a few days ago to go with my beetroot hummus recipe and they came our perfectly. Here is the recipe if you’d like to give it a try!
Ingredients (makes 6 small breads):
- 1 cup all purpose flour (125 gr)
- 1 cup spelt flour (125 gr)
- 175 ml lukewarm water
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
In a small bowl combine yeast and sugar. Pour in about 1/4 cup of the 175 ml of lukewarm water and let it sit on your kitchen counter until it gets all bubbling.
In a larger bowl combine flours, and salt
Add the yeast mixture and oil to the flour and slowly pour in the remaining water. Do not add the water all at once, but in small batches while you knead the tho. It will take you about 5 min of hand kneading to get a soft and smooth dough. Place it into a large bowl greased with oil, cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for about 45 min or until doubled in size.
50 min later for me
divide the dough into 6-8 small balls
on a lightly floured surface roll out each piece into a thin circle or oval
Cook each flat bread in a nice hot skillet drizzled with oil (just a tiny bit) until blistered and cooked. You will see that small bubbles will start to form.
these small bubbles will then turn into big one! Flip it over and cook until golden on the other side.
Serve them nice and warm with your curries and/or dips!
