Thai-Style Meatballs

My boyfriend and I both LOVE Thai food,. There is something special in that mix of spiciness and creaminess that just get us addicted.

As you guys already know, I like to combine food and ingredients from different country and play with what I define like “my own fusion cuisine”, so I decided to create something that had a bit of that magic spicy-creamy of Thai, together with that comfortableness of Italian food.

The result is this new dish: Thai-style meatballs. Let me know how you like it 🙂

For the meatballs:

  • 500 gr ground beef
  • 2 tbsp oats
  • 2 tbsp grated carrots
  • 1 whole small egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp coconut milk
  • 1/2 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tbsp green onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp Thai basil, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp red curry paste
  • 1/2 tsp green curry paste
  • ½ teaspoons curry powder
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp cilantro, chopped

For the sauce:

  • 1-1/2 cups coconut milk
  • 1 tsp red curry paste
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ tsp curry powder
  • ½  tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, oats, carrots, egg, coconut milk, fish sauce, garlic, green onions, Thai basil, fresh ginger, curry pastes, curry powder, red pepper flake and black pepper.

Mix with a heavy wooden spoon or for best results use your (clean) hands. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the meat mixture into tablespoon-sized balls, and place them on the baking sheet.

Bake at 180 C for about 30-40 min or until meatballs are cooked and crispy outside

In a saucepan, combine the ingredients for the sauce over low heat. Whisk to combine and let it warm slowly.

Add the baked meatballs to the sauce, cover with a lid and let simmer for about 10-15 min.

Remove from heat and garnish with cilantro.
