The Italian Style Hamburger (AKA Schiacciatine con mozzarella e prosciutto)

This is what I call an Italian style hamburger, cause it looks like a hamburger but in practice is quite different from it for way of preparing and cooking. In Italian we call it  “schiacciatina” which means “pressed meat”.

The convenient thing about the Italian humburger is that you can prepare it ahead of time and just eat it up last minute. I’ve learned this recipe from my mom and it is one of my favorite way of cooking ground beef.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients (for about 5 schiacciatine):

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 50 g grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 slices of bread
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • fresh chopped parsley
  • black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 glass of white wine
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 50 g cheddar cheese and 1 slice of ham

Soak the bread into water, then squeeze it.

In a bowl combine the ground beef, salt, egg, bread, parsley and black pepper.

With a wooden spoon or a using your hand, mix all the ingredients together till well incorporated.

Divide the meat into 5 balls. Take one ball and press it in your hand, in the middle place some mozzarella and a piece of ham.

Close it well making attention that the cheese and ham is inside and wont come out while cooking.

Place your schiacciatine in a skillet with some olive oil. Cook till lightly brown from both sides. Add the wine, cover with a lid and let cook at low heat for about 15-20 min.

Serve immediatelly when the mozzarella is still hot and melted inside!
