Finding a proper Mexican restaurant in Shanghai is pretty much an adventure. I’ve been to almost all of them in town: Cantina Agave, El Mexicano, Maya,…. they all are way too over priced and not authentic. At least this is my opinion!
That’s why I have decided to learn how to make simple mexican food myself.
The first step is making Tortillas, the base of most mexican dishes.
Here is the recipe!
Ingredients (for 6 tortillas):
- 1 and 3/4 cups flour
- 1/4 cup shortening (or butter)
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp instant yeast
In a bowl place flour, salt, yeast and shortening (butter) and mix it with your hands until it resample coarse meal
Slowly add warm water and work the dough till it gets smooth. Cover it up and have it rest for about 15 min.
Divide the dough into 6 little balls. Roll each ball of dough out into a round shape.
Place each raw tortilla on a warm comal and cook on each side for about 1 min.
Now you can use the tortillas for making burritos, quesadilla, Fajitas, ext.
